Not The Motorcycle Diaries

Josh and I got our motorcycles finally (a 1995 BMW R1100 GS for me and a 2001 Kawasaki KLR 650 for Josh) and we’re looking at an very soon departure for the border crossing into Mexico and then down Baja California to La Paz; the first leg of our trip. From here we take the ferry to Mazatlan and then ride south to La Cruz de Huanacoxtle, a small fishing village to the north of Puerto Vallarta. From there we’ll head inland a bit and cruise through central Mexico and up the Yucatan a bit then down Belize and into Guatemala by following the Rio Dulce up to Lago Izabal. From there we head through Honduras and Nicaragua and on into Costa Rica. Playas del Cocos lies on the western peninsula and will be one of our more lengthy stops. We’ll head inland and then on down into Panama with the Canal Zone as our major destination. Josh and I are planning on crewing for hire on pleasure boats that are going through the canal to make a bit of scratch (I’m assuming we’re broke by now, for the third time). We’ll then hitch a ride with one of these boats that are heading to the San Blas Islands where we will relax with the Cuna Yala Indians (and perhaps challenge them to a game of volleyball). And then on to South America which will probably see us on a container ship to Bogota, Columbia. From there we’ll just have to figure that out.

This is all predicated on our own travels as kids aboard our sailboat with the rest of our family; It will actually be 21 years since we set sail out of San Diego for our circumnavigation (we never quite made it around the world but we did end up in Key West seven years later.) The boat had been built by my father in the mountains of Oregon for twelve years which culminated in the launching of it in 1985 in Portland. We lived in Port Townsend, Washington for some time in order to save enough money to actually buy sails, during this period my parents worked on other sailboats learning the basics of seamanship and the relentless upkeep that boats require. We then motor-sailed down the western seaboard stopping in at San Francisco and finally running out of money again in San Diego.

Josh and I start our journey in San Diego and hope to not be broke by the time we leave.
